Leather can be classified on the basis of different types of raw material used for the making of leather. Leather that is obtained by removing of hair is called grain, it can be further differentiating. The two layers in which grain can be differentiated are split and top. Split is the lower grains of the natural grain obtain and it has content of the original grain.

Top grain or Full grain Leather:

Leather made from removing the hair present on the epidermis is called full grin leather. No finishing or polishing is done on this leather it is the most natural form of leather. The two process by which finishing is give to full grain leather; they are aniline and semi aniline. In aniline process, the finishing is done buy dipping the leather in a transparent dye of colors, uniformly without loosing the natural effect of leather. Semi- aniline process is a process where leather is process for the extra coating to prevent it from stain. The full grain leather is the most natural form as well as the most popular type of leather.  It is the most expensive, with best quality and the most comfortable type of leather.

Split Leather:

After the removal of the top grain from the remaining part of the hide. The remaining part is called split leather. Split leather is comparatively much more fragile, cheaper and hardens than full grain leather. It can get damage easily, if not handle properly it is mostly used for making suede leather

Corrected grain leather:

Corrected grain leather is referred to as polishes to remove or correct scratches present on the grain of the full grain leather. Very inferior quality of hide is use for the making of corrected leather. Pigmented or semi aniline process are the two types of procedure used for corrected leather. Pigmented leather is preferred most of the time than semi aniline process as it is better at correcting the scratches

Suede/ Nubuck/ Buffed Leather:

It is a soft leather created buy splitting the leather between the grain and hide, surface of this leather is buffed to make it soft. It is fragile in nature due to which it has more chances of getting damage quickly when ever it comes in contact with any type of liquid, because of which it is cheaper than the full grain leather. The surface of suede leather gives you a velvet type feeling and it is also not a good option to use it for upholstery purpose.

Coated or Bicasted Leather:

It is a synthetic type of leather, that is made by applying a layer of polyurethane to the surface it is just like split leather. This type of leather is more durable than any other type of leather. This type of leather was initially used only in shoe industries, but now days due to its high durability and cheaper prices than leather it is used mostly in upholstery commercial places like bars.

Faux Leather

it is man made leather, as compared to any other leather and it is more durable due to the synthetic materials used. It is widely used in commercial places for the furniture, because it is the cheapest and durable type of leather which does not get damaged soon, and looks like original leather.
